Warhammer 40,000 is another Games Workshop table top wargame played with 28mm miniatures. This one is set in the 41st Century, a time when Man has explored vast areas of the universe and discovered many unhealthy places and races. War is constant and unremitting in this dark vision of the future. There are considerable fantasy elements as well, with many planets and systems inhabited by Orks and Eldar(Elves).
Players take command of one of the many different armies available and fight battles on virtually any kind of landscape. Part of the fun of any of these games is designing and building scenery. Well made scenery considerably enhances 40K since it gives your troops cover from the devastating weaponry that most armies have at their disposal. Melee combat is still very important however and very few battles will be decided with shooting alone.
The two most popular armies available are the Space Marines and the Chaos Space Marines. The latter can also have daemons and daemonic infantry. Within these two armies there are so many options available that no two armies are likely to be the same. You can for example forsake powerful weaponry in favour of heavily armoured melee specialists, or lightly armoured hit and run squadrons.
Most armies have a selection of infantry, cavalry and armoured vehicles as well as individual heroes and monstrous allies. Some armies like the chitinous Tyranids are made up entirely of monsters. Others like the Necrons are machine like in their make up.
